City of Guelph: Silver-Rated Fleet (2010)

guelph_large_placement.jpg“Guelph can take pride in being the first municipality in Ontario to achieve a Silver Rating for our transit fleet. The E3 Fleet rating is proof of Guelph's commitment to reducing our environmental impact, including greenhouse gas emissions."

— Mayor Karen Farbridge.

In June 2010 the City of Guelph became one of only two municipalities in Ontario to receive an E3 Silver Rating for excellence in fleet management, and the only one to have its public transit fleet included in the designation.

The City undertook a comprehensive fleet review in 2008 as part of the E3 rating criteria. Following the review, the City adopted new policies. Employees were trained in how to increase fuel efficiency in vehicle and equipment operation, and were called on to reduce fuel operating expenses by minimizing engine idling. The City further cut its carbon footprint and lowered capital costs by right-sizing vehicles for intended tasks.

“We are pleased to be the second municipality in Ontario to be awarded with a Silver Rating,” said Bill Barr, the City’s Manager of Fleet and Equipment. “Earning the E3 Rating has been a two- year process and involved several departments of our organization.”

The City has said it will continue to monitor fleet performance using the E3 Rating system to determine where other improvements are possible.

The E3 Fleet Program reflects the commitment and expertise of many people, including some of the country’s most innovative fleet managers. All have a common passion – to see Canada’s fleets take a cleaner, green road to the future.

The Fraser Basin Council thanks our partners at Climate Change Central (Alberta) and Canadian Energy Efficiency Alliance (Fleet Challenge Ontario) for helping E3 Fleet flourish as a national program.

We also acknowledge our E3 Fleet Charter members: Auto-Gas Propane, BC Hydro, BC Ministry of Environment, City of Coquitlam, Corporation of Delta, Enbridge, City of Hamilton, Hydro One, City of Kelowna, Township of Langley, District of Maple Ridge, City of North Vancouver, Novex Couriers, City of Prince George, District of Saanich, University of BC and Municipality of Whistler. We’ve enjoyed the journey so far, and it’s only just begun!
