About E3 Fleet

E3 Fleet is a unique, made-in-Canada program that helps public and private sector fleets of vehicles meet green standards for performance.

E3 Fleet members gain access to helpful information, tools and resources, and two unique services:

  • Fleet Review: This is an independent review of a fleet’s performance, offering an analysis of key performance indicators and opportunities for improvement.
  • Fleet Rating: A fleet can also have its performance publicly recognized by qualifying for an E3 Fleet Rating at a Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum level based on points accumulated that relate to a fleet’s action plan, training and awareness, idling reduction, vehicle purchasing, fuel data management, operations and maintenance, trip and route planning, utilization management, fuel efficiency, and greenhouse gas performance.

E3 stands for Energy, Environment, and Excellence − and that is the core focus of the program. The intent is to green up Canada’s fleets by helping managers tackle the tough issues − how to reduce operating costs, lower harmful emissions and increase efficiency. It is also the only program to recognize excellence in green performance.

Founded by the Fraser Basin Council (FBC) in British Columbia in 2006, the E3 Fleet is now positioned for expansion under the management of the Fleet Challenge Inc. in Ontario. Both RSI and FBC are excited for the future of this national program.

Looking Back: A History of E3 Fleet

The E3 Fleet concept emerged thanks to some blue sky − or rather clear sky − thinking. By 2006 many people recognized the importance of green building practices through such programs as LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). The question arose: Could green transportation be recognized and encouraged in a similar way?

As a non-profit organization dedicated to sustainability, the Fraser Basin Council was already active on green fleet initiatives in British Columbia when it tackled this question. Ready to take the next step, FBC began working with some of Canada’s leading fleet managers to plan the E3 Fleet program – the first of its kind in North America.

Momentum built quickly. The E3 Fleet program was formally launched with 17 charter members, including municipalities, utilities and urban delivery companies, which together operated more than 15,000 vehicles.

Thanks are owed to these early supporters: Auto-Gas Propane, BC Hydro, BC Ministry of Environment, City of Coquitlam, Corporation of Delta, Enbridge, City of Hamilton, Hydro One (Ontario), City of Kelowna, Township of Langley, District of Maple Ridge, City of North Vancouver, Novex Couriers, City of Prince George, District of Saanich, University of BC and Municipality of Whistler.

The Road Ahead

In 2016 E3 Fleet celebrates its 10th Anniversary as Canada’s first and only green fleet review and rating program. Now under the management of Fleet Challenge Inc., E3 Fleet is ready for a new decade of service, growth and expansion. You can be a part of it.

E3 Fleet Partners

The E3 Fleet program reflects the commitment and expertise of many people, including some of the country’s most innovative fleet managers. All have a common passion – to see Canada’s fleets take a cleaner, green road to the future.

The Fraser Basin Council launched E3 Fleet in 2006 in cooperation with Climate Change Central (Alberta) and Fleet Challenge. Since October 2016, the program has been managed by Fleet Challenge Inc.

The E3 Fleet Charter members were also pivotal to its success: Auto-Gas Propane, BC Hydro, BC Ministry of Environment, City of Coquitlam, Corporation of Delta, Enbridge, City of Hamilton, Hydro One, City of Kelowna, Township of Langley, District of Maple Ridge, City of North Vancouver, Novex Couriers, City of Prince George, District of Saanich, University of BC and Municipality of Whistler. We’ve enjoyed the journey so far, and it’s only just begun. Join us!
