Corporation of Delta: Gold-Rated Fleet (2009)

delta_large.jpg“I am thrilled that the Corporation of Delta has been able to achieve one of the country’s first Gold E3 fleet ratings. Reducing the environmental footprint created by our corporate fleet has been a huge effort on the part of a lot of people — the Engineering and Climate Action Departments, our corporate policy analysts and upper level management, everybody. It’s a municipality-wide commitment that’s paying off.”

— Delta Mayor Lois Jackson

In 2009 the Corporation of Delta became one of two municipalities in British Columbia (the other being the City of Vancouver) to earn an E3 Gold Rating.

“Vancouver and Delta can take pride in achieving Gold Ratings,” said Dr. Charles Jago, Chair of the Fraser Basin Council. “They are showing exceptional leadership and a serious commitment to improving air quality and reducing the greenhouse gas emissions that drive climate change.”

The Corporation of Delta cut its corporate fleet emissions dramatically, even in the face of increased demand for service. The Corporation improved its fuel efficiency by 6% for every kilometre travelled, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 1% overall between 2007 and 2008.

The municipality’s E3 Rating can be attributed to several key fleet initiatives, including: a fuel-efficient fleet purchasing strategy that replaced 16 conventional vehicles with 16 hybrid vehicles over a two-year period, a successful anti-idling campaign, a vehicle right-sizing program and the installation of GPS and idling auto shut-offs units for Delta’s larger vehicles.

Delta also uses biodiesel in all of its diesel engine vehicles and has launched a fleet training program led by a newly appointed fleet trainer.

Delta Council had committed to achieving a Bronze Rating by the end of 2008. The commendable efforts of staff allowed the Corporation to surpass this goal.

E3 Fleet Partners

The E3 Fleet program reflects the commitment and expertise of many people, including some of the country’s most innovative fleet managers. All have a common passion – to see Canada’s fleets take a cleaner, green road to the future.

The Fraser Basin Council launched E3 Fleet in 2006 in cooperation with Climate Change Central (Alberta) and Fleet Challenge. Since October 2016, the program has been managed by Richmond Sustainability Initiatives (RSI).

The E3 Fleet Charter members were also pivotal to its success: Auto-Gas Propane, BC Hydro, BC Ministry of Environment, City of Coquitlam, Corporation of Delta, Enbridge, City of Hamilton, Hydro One, City of Kelowna, Township of Langley, District of Maple Ridge, City of North Vancouver, Novex Couriers, City of Prince George, District of Saanich, University of BC and Municipality of Whistler. We’ve enjoyed the journey so far, and it’s only just begun. Join us!

E3 Fleet in Brief

E3 Fleet is a Canada-wide program that helps public and private sector organizations green up their vehicle fleets.

E3 Fleet offers information and tools to help you increase fuel efficiency in your fleet, reduce harmful emissions, manage expenses, and incorporate new technologies, fuels and best management practices. We offer Fleet Review and Fleet Rating, unique opportunities for you to boost fleet performance and receive recognition for that achievement.
